SustainE HS series heat pumps provide dehumidification and heating to natatorium pool (Indoor Swimming Pool). The main objective of this heat pump is to maintain the indoor air relative humidity at 60% ~ 65%. Latent heat from dehumidification is then used for maintaining indoor air temperature and/or pool water temperature. SustainE dehumidification heat pump system is flexible and a custom design in matching particular project requirements on dehumidification and heating.

Benefits:

  • Low indoor air humidity inhabit bacteria growth.
  • Good Indoor Air Quality.
  • Protect decoration form moisture damage.
  • Latent heat in dehumidification is recovered for air reheat and/or pool water heating.
  • Economizer for free air cooling in summer season.
  • Provide air-conditioning by operating the remote condenser in heat rejection mode.
  • Can be operated in reverse cycle, remote condenser than serve as an air source heat pump for heating in winter.
  • High COP for dehumidification and heating.

Each mode of operation is described below.

SustainE Indoor Swimming Pool Heat Pump Schematic Diagram

Operation in Summer Condition

  1. Mechanical Ventilation - Both Supply Fan and Return Fan are in operation.
  2. Centre air damper shall be in close position.
  3. Return air damper, fresh air damper and exhaust air damper shall be in fully open position.
  4. Fresh air is drew from outdoor for free cooling.
  5. Dehumidification process and compressors are disabled.
  6. Temperature control is disabled.

Operation in Extreme Summer Condition

  1. Centre air damper shall be in open position.
  2. Fresh air damper and exhaust air damper shall be in proper position such that desire air flow can be obtained.
  3. Both Supply Fan & Return Fan are in operation.
  4. Air-conditioning process is enabled, heat pump controller will increase or decrease steps in order to maintain return air temperature within set-point criteria.
  5. Heat recovered from cooling process shall be rejected to outdoor via remote condenser.

Operation in Spring / Winter Condition

  1. Centre air damper shall be in open position.
  2. Fresh air damper and exhaust air  damper shall be in proper position such that desire air flow can be obtained.
  3. Both Supply Fan & Return Fan are in operation.
  4. The dehumidification process is enabled, heat pump controller will increase or decrease steps in order to maintain the return air humidity within set-point criteria.
  5. The DX cooling coil provides cooling & dehumidification.
  6. Heat recovered from cooling & dehumidification shall be used to air-reheat after cooling coil and/or pool water re-heat (pool water temperature drops due to evaporation).
  7. Excessive heat is then rejected to outdoor via remote condenser.

Operation in Winter / Extreme Winter Conditions

  1. Centre air damper in open position.
  2. Both Supply Fan & Return Fan are in operation.
  3. Fresh air damper and exhaust air damper are in position such that desire air flow can be obtained.
  4. Due to intake of fresh air which has extreme low moisture content, indoor humidity will be automatically reduced.
  5. Fresh air sensible heating and pool water heating are required to maintain temperature set-point.
  6. Heat pump unit is then operated in reverse cycle to provide Air-to- water heating and/or Air-to-air heating.
  7. The outdoor remote condenser absorbs heat energy from ambient air and provide heating to water and/or indoor air.
  8. The DX cooling coil is disabled.
  9. No electric duct heater or water heater are required.

 Features:

  1. Auxiliary chilled / hot water air coils are available as options.
  2. Dual refrigerant circuit design allows staging to minimize energy consumption.
  3. Reverse cycle air-to-water or air-to-air heating optimize energy eficiency.
  4. All air coils within heat pump unit are epoxy coated or E-coated to prevent chloramines corrosion.
  5. All refrigerant components are out of air stream for easy maintenance.
  6. Double wall Cupro-nickel refrigerant to water heat exchanger to avoid contamination of pool water.
  7. Computational Fluid Dynamics to analysis air flow pattern, temperature and humidity distribution.

 Guidelines for Indoor Pool Dehumidification

A well-designed and installed dehumidification system controls both temperature and humidity levels. a typical residential or commercial indoor pool conditions is:

  • The pool water temperature is set at 26oC to 28oC (non-competition activity).
  • The air temperature is set at one degree above the pool water temperature.
  • The relative humidity is maintained between 60% to 65%.
  • Ventilation with not less than 8 air change per hour.
  • Ventilation per total floor area is 10 Litre per second per square meters.
  • Fresh air per bather is 12 Litre per second per person.
  • Use Computational Fluid Dynamics to analysis air flow pattern, temperature and humidity distribution.

Humidity control, ventilation, air distribution, pool water chemistry and evaporation rates are major considerations in satisfying comfort requirements. High humidity can increase levels of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other factors that reduce air quality. It is also destructive to building components.
